Curriculum Vitae

I am Jacopo Mariani and I was born in Sesto San Giovanni on 31 March 1994. In October 2019, I obtained the master’s degree in medical biotechnology from the University of Milano-Bicocca.  My Thesis’ title was: “VCOOL (Ventricular Cooling Device): sviluppo di un dispositivo medico per il trattamento dell’ictus ischemico acuto attraverso l’induzione di ipotermia cerebrale selettiva”. During my thesis’ period I took part in different rat’s ischaemic stroke experiments. I cooperate with a French research group (CERMEP) in Lyon, where I approached to MRI techniques. The MRI images acquisition helped me to became confident in using specific analysis software (FSLeyes and MIPAV). In November 2019 I continued my University career by winning the Neuroscience PhD programme with the project “Multi-centre Translational Trial of Remote Ischemic Conditioning in Acute Ischemic Stroke (TRICS)”. Currently, I am setting Staining Techniques and Cutting slices protocols, in order to perform histological analysis and carrying out the project.

Multi-center Translational Trial of Remote Ischemic Conditioning in Acute Ischemic Stroke (TRICS)

  • Track: Experimental Neuroscience
  • Tutor: prof Carlo Ferrarese

Treatment for acute ischemic stroke has evolved rapidly after the efficacy of recanalization therapies (intravenous thrombolysis and endovascular thrombectomy) was proved in large clinical trials. Nonetheless, a significant number of patients does not achieve a good outcome despite recanalization therapies or is excluded from recanalization therapies due to contraindications. Remote ischemic conditioning (RIC) is a simple non-pharmacological therapy, which consists in delivering a transient ischemic insult in the limbs to achieve a neuroprotective effect against cerebral ischemia. RIC has been reported as a remarkable neuroprotective strategy, which has already been investigated by basic research experiments in term of pathophysiological mechanisms and pre-clinical trials by individual scientists. For these reasons, RIC displays a highly promising translational profile.

The aim of this project is to perform a to investigate the efficacy of RIC in an experimental ischemic stroke.
