CURRICULUM

Giulia Fumagalli obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Biotechnology in 2012 and her master degree in Medical Biotechnology in 2015 at the University of Milano-Bicocca.

She works on in vivo research projects regarding Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neurotoxicity at the Experimental Neurology Unit (University of Milano-Bicocca), where she currently is Ph.D. student in Neuroscience.

Her main skills are in the development and use of in vivo experimental models to study the peripheral neuropathies.

RESEARCH PROJECT

The role of the immune system in different animal models of Oxaliplatin Induced Peripheral Neurotoxicity.

  • Tutor: Guido Cavaletti
  • Track: Experimental Neuroscience

Oxaliplatin (OHP) is a third-generation platinum-based chemotherapy agent commonly used for colorectal cancer. Despite its efficacy, it causes various forms of side effects, especially peripheral neurotoxicity (OIPN). No cure is aviable: the mechanisms of OIPN are not completely understood and should be studied.

OIPN consists of two main clinical manifestations: acute and chronic ones. Acute phenomena, such as transient paresthesia at limb extremities and cramps, appear during or shorter after OHP administration and lasting 24-72 hours. These symptoms are induced by cold exposure and caused by axonal hyperexcitability.

Chronic neurotoxicity is a dose-dependent side effect characterized by a painful neuropathic syndrome, which can lead to discontinuation of chemotherapy.

An emerging concept is that neuroinflammation is one of the major mechanisms underlying chemotherapy-induced peripheral neurotoxicity: studies in different animal models suggest an involvment of the neuroimmune signalling and an increase in pro-inflammatory cytokine expression in the establishement of neuropathic pain.

In this study a possible involvement of the immune response in animal models of Oxaliplatin induced neurotoxicity and neuropathic pain will be evaluated, examining different schedules of treatment in different mice models.
