Ioannis U. Isaias is director of the Parkinson Institute of Milan (Italy) and head of the Neuroimaging and Motor Control Laboratory of the University Hospital of Würzburg (Germany). He is recognized for his work combining molecular imaging studies with biomechanics and neurophysiological recordings. This multidisciplinary approach has provided insights into the basal ganglia circuit changes that underlie the manifestations of Parkinson’s disease and related movement disorders, fostering new developments in neuromodulation therapies such as adaptive deep brain stimulation.
Dr. Isaias received his medical degree from the University of Pavia (Italy) and the University of Leipzig (Germany). After completing residency training in neurology at the University of Milano-Bicocca (Milano, Italy), he worked as a research fellow at the Mount Sinai Hospital (New York, USA). He later obtained a PhD in human physiology at the University of Milan (Italy). Since 2015 he is full professor at the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg (Germany). In 2016 he was appointed adjunct professor at the New York University Langone Medical Center (New York, USA).
