Pharmaceutical Biotechnologist, Ph.D.

Head, CAA and AD Translational Research and Biomarkers Laboratory
Founder and Coordinator, iCAβ International Network

He is leading translational and medical applied research aimed to improve patient care by accelerating the development and delivery of personalized healthcare, including personalized therapies and diagnostics, applied to neurodegenerative, neuroimmunological and cerebrovascular disorders, particularly on the immune-mediated pathogenetic mechanisms in amyloid-related imaging abnormalities (ARIA) of immunotherapy with mAbs for Alzheimer’s disease and in Cerebral Amyloid Angiopathy-related inflammation (CAA-ri).

He has more than 10y experience in the R%D and validation of diagnostic, prognostic and therapeutic biomarkers and tools, including innovative ultrasensitive and beads-based immuno enzymatic assays.

Prof. Piazza is the founding Member and Coordinator of the inflammatory Cerebral Amyloid Angiopathy and Alzheimer’s disease βiomarkers International Network (iCAβ), a World-Wide Consortium involving 35 leading Centers of Excellence on AD and CAA, from 12 different Countries.

The validation of biomarkers of ARIA, as well as the definition of clinico-therapeutic recommendations to guide CAA and AD immunotherapy trials, is the main goal of the the biomarkARIA Research Project (P.I. Dr. Piazza) and iCAB International Network , the largest worldwide effort aimed at deciphering the pathogenetic mechanisms of CAA-ri and ARIA in a translational and cooperatively-open design between Academia and Pharma companies.

Prof. Piazza is a stable board member of the European Alzheimer’s Disease Centers of Excellence Consortium (EADC), representing the UNIMIB Institution within EADC, and he has active roles in numerous Societies such as Scientific Board Member of SINdem, WG Member of International CAA Association and of the PIA Vascular Cognitive Disorders ISTAART group of the Alzheimer’s Association.

Prof. Piazza recent grant history includes: No. 2 AARG, No.1 PNNR-MUR, No.1 Cariplo Foundation, No.1 CIHR research proposals funded.
